Italy: Seven suspected human traffickers held

Police in southern Italy on Tuesday arrested seven people trafficking suspects of Egyptian and Tunisian nationality. Police said the arrests came amid six-month probe that uncovered an international people-smuggling ring based in Egypt with cells across Italy. The alleged ring had cells operating in Italy's southern regions of Puglia – where police made Tuesday's arrests – in Campania and Sicily as well as in the northern Lombardy region surrounding Milan.

Delhi Government on Monday approved a comprehensive compensation scheme for victims of rape, acid attacks, human trafficking, child abuse and kidnapping. Under the scheme, approved by the Delhi Cabinet, a rape victim will get a maximum compensation of Rs three lakh and a minimum of Rs two lakh within two months of the crime.

A city court has asked the Delhi government to probe allegations against the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that it released victims of human trafficking and child labour to their relatives, who again pushed the children back to areas from where they were rescued. Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau’s order came in a case pertaining to a series of raids conducted by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police and NGO Shakti Vahini last year. During the raids, several girls, including minors, were rescued from illegal placement agencies.

Malaysia: MoU to be signed to curb human trafficking

Malaysia and Bangladesh will be signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to combat human trafficking between the two countries so that innocent people are not exploited, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein. "The MoU will be signed soon after both countries create a mechanism at the operational level whereby political will between Malaysia and Bangladesh can be translated into an action plan involving the respective authorities," he said.

Immigration officials intercepted a husband and wife they believe were planning on smuggling nine women through New Zealand because of an international "alert" on the wife's name. The nine women claimed to be school friends travelling together, but when separated they couldn't answer questions about each other, and didn't even know each other's names, said INZ border operations manager Karen Urwin.
